Day of Prep for Sparky's Challenge Race
You’ve done it! You’ve put the hard work in to train for a race! And race day is just around the corner. Wondering what you should do the day of Sparky’s Challenge Run to help you perform at your best? We’ve got a few tips for you to help you out!
- Catch those zzz’s.
Getting a good night’s sleep before race day will help you feel rested, refreshed, and ready for the run. Pre-run jitters can happen and sometimes strike the night before. When this happens, try relaxing before bedtime with your favorite tea, take a bath, or use melatonin if it’s something you’re comfortable with. Do what you can to get good sleep so that you’re race-ready the next day.
- Show up early.
There’s a lot to do the day of the race, so getting there early will help you out. Some things you’ll want to look for on race day are where to park, where the check in line is, where the restroom is, and where to go for the starting line. Arriving early will help you find all of these places and give you time to warm up as well.
- Warm up.
30 minutes before the race begins, start warming up. Do some dynamic stretches such as walking lunges, butt kicks, and high knees. Follow up with a brisk walk or easy jog and slowly build your pace from there. After this, feel free to gently stretch your muscles to help them perform better and avoid injury during the race.
- Fuel your body.
It is important to give yourself the fuel you need for the race. Aim to eat about 2 hours before the run. You’ll want to eat something high in energy and easy on the stomach. Think pasta, banana and nut butter, whole wheat turkey and cheese sandwich, toast with avocado, oatmeal and fruit, or a cheese stick with carrots.
- Stay hydrated.
Keep yourself hydrated throughout the day of the race, but be sure not to chug any water 30 minutes before the race; get most of your hydration in before then. If you need water right before the race, take small sips to keep the heat at bay. The key is to drink regularly, but not excessively.
If you follow these tips, you are sure to succeed! Best of luck and keep your eyes on the finish line!
