NED Awareness
It’s National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, and it’s important to be in the know about the struggles that you or the people in your life might be facing so that you can build your best you and help others to grow into their best selves.
Did you know that there are more than ten different types of eating disorders? And that they affect more than 30 million Americans of all genders in their lives, regardless of age, race, religion, sexual orientation, or body weight? Unsurprisingly, the media’s portrayal of eating disorders does not tell the whole story.
That’s why #NEDAwareness Week is so important – it gives people affected by eating disorders a chance to tell their stories in order to help dispel some of the myths about eating disorders. Share your story and discover others’ using the hashtags #NEDAwareness and #ComeAsYouAre on social media.
Here at ASU, we strive to provide resources for students to be their healthiest in mind, body, and spirit. Join ASU’s Nutrition Educators this week for a series of events on NED Awareness.
This week, remember to check in with your friends and family, especially if you notice any of these warning behaviors:
- Preoccupation with weight, food, calories, or dieting
- Complete avoidance of certain foods
- Avoiding eating around other people
- Skipping meals
- Extreme mood swings
- Loss of interest in spending time with friends or taking part in other usual activities
You can find more warning signs and other information about eating disorders here.
If you or someone you know is struggling or might be struggling with an eating disorder, you can contact the National Eating Disorder Association Confidential Helpline or make an appointment with ASU Counseling Services or ASU Health Services.
