Devils In Depth: Style

“Devils in Depth” is a project that gets down to earth and captures the diversity of Arizona State’s student population. We engage in conversations with students in an effort to learn more about their passions and get a feel for who they really are. Then we ask them their thoughts on a central theme. This week’s theme is centered on style.

Chad, Vincent and Janicia

C: For me, I’ve never been one to be real flashy. I’ve always liked a more subdued unassuming style about myself. I don’t wear a lot of loud colors. A lot of dark hues, simple stuff.

V: Whatever clothes aren’t dirty. Those are the ones I’m putting on, mostly.

J: My boyfriend says that I dress kind of like 80s-ish. Sometimes I bring out my tradition with hoop earrings or whatever it might be. Pretty random, but not one style.

V: Have you seen the “Step Up” movies? When I was 16, I would pause it and try to copy how Moose dresses and try and look like Moose when I was in high school.

Katja

“A lot of it is my personal style. I take a lot of things from my mom as well. She also is comfort centered as a person. She always looks laid back and kind of effortless. I look to French women a lot for their sense of style because they always look laid-back and relaxed, but something about them looks kind of perfect.”

“People like Cher or Lady Gaga, I admire them for doing their own thing and choosing pieces [fashion] and being bold with them. I wouldn’t necessarily wear all of the stuff they wear, but it’s inspirational in a sense that it makes me excited to try new things as far as the clothes that I wear.”

Douglas

“I grew up with [superheroes]. My father was really into comic books, my mom is really into video games, so it kind of made me.

”“I’m not really hip with all the new stuff, I’m really picky. I have these Justice League high tops that I got recently.”

Denzil

“I have a fascination with knowledge so I’ve gotten into all kinds of things, such as carpentry, high-powered rifle shooting, chemistry for sure.”

“I would say my style is more simplistic and sleek, in a way…I’m not so much about fancy, as long as it’s something that I like. Three-hundred sixty-five days a year, [my outfit] is a T-shirt and blue jeans. My favorite pair of shoes are my Skechers.”

Eden, Martín

M: “[To me], style is how you dress, the type of vibe you give to people.”

E: “I think that style is being able to form your own personal image without basing it on trends, so you know what you want to wear without basing it on other people.”

M: “[I admire] Kanye’s style. It’s minimalistic. It’s making a statement.”

E: “Mick Jagger is the reason everyone wears plaid pants and dope boots. He started the rock star style.”
