Devils in Depth: Love
“Devils in Depth” is a project that gets down to earth and captures the diversity of Arizona State’s student population. We engage in conversations with students in an effort to learn more about their passions and get a feel for who they really are. Then we ask them their thoughts on a central theme. This week’s theme is centered on love of all kinds.

“I feel like love is kind of a selfless thing. Like, when you love someone, you just want what’s best for them. You want to see them grow and succeed and be the best person they can be, and you want to be that person who can be part of all.”

“I love the outdoors. What’s not to love? I just love getting outside, being active, hiking, biking, doing some mountain biking, adventure motorcycling.
I did a mountain bike race, it’s called ’24 Hours in the Enchanted Forest.’ It’s over in New Mexico, it’s a 24-hour mountain bike race. I didn’t do 24 hours worth of it, but it was beautiful and it was a lot of fun. It’s like a big party.”

“I love my family, love them to death. It kinda sucks right now because I’m the only one here in Arizona — they’re all in Illinois.
I like how much I like to learn. If I could stay in college the rest of my life and just take classes, get paid, have my rent and all that stuff taken care of, I’d do it. I would learn everything about every subject there is. I love learning new things, that’s why I love biology. I’m taking psychology classes too, because that’s a different type of learning how your body works.
My girlfriend’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. She’s super sweet. I just love that we all have different perspectives in life too, different thoughts about different things. It’s nice having that openness with someone else — she might think one way about something, I might think a different way and we’ll have a conversation about it.”

“Freshman year, I met this dude and we were really good friends. We just bonded more than anybody else because it was toward finals week, and when you live in the dorms, everybody’s leaving [for] home and you two are the last people. We just got really close and then we didn’t talk for over a year. We reconnected earlier in 2017, and it was literally like no time was lost. It was really nice. Even though we don’t have what we started with, I knew I could always trust him and I know that we’re still friends. We tried making things work, it’s just not time. But I love him. He helped me discover who I was and what I wanted.”

“I love rap music. Listening to Lil Wayne and Eminem in middle school with my older brother who likes rap music, we would listen to it on the way to school, and we would bond over it and that was our thing. I just started learning more and more about it. I listen to it everyday. Basically, my life revolves around it, everyone knows I’m obsessed with it.
I love my sense of humor because when anything goes wrong, if you’re able to laugh at yourself, it just makes everything better. I like our workplace because we all joke around a lot, so it just makes it so much better.
Self-love means to me every day being able to look in the mirror and not dislike something — like the first thing you see in the mirror is not bad. That’s self-love, just being able to live every day in your own skin and not feel weird about that. Be comfortable in your own skin.”
