Devils in Depth: Introspection, Part II
“Devils in Depth” is a project that gets down to earth and captures the diversity of Arizona State’s student population. We engage in conversations with students in an effort to learn more about their passions and get a feel for who they really are.
Julio Lugo is a Copy Writer at the SDFC and one of the minds behind Devils in Depth. In Part Two of the two-part series, co-author Jeremy Beren sat down with Julio and asked him his thoughts on the themes covered this semester.
What was your favorite Devils in Depth theme?
The sports one was sick, just because we had the gamer dudes. They were so cool, so fun to talk to. I just could have stood there and talked to them about so much stuff.
That encounter just reminded me about what was so cool about this whole thing: sometimes you get people who are really talkative and you become cool with them.
How do you combat stress?
[I] go to the gym. That helps me de-stress…last year, when I was very sad and stressed, I started going to the gym. It helps.
How do you define love?
I see it as just making sacrifices for another person, or just wanting to be with another person. Think about [it like] you go on about your day, there’s some people you just miss, people you wish you were with, just chilling and talking to.
I love my brothers. So some days, [if] it’s a long day or I haven’t heard from my little brother in a while, I’ll be like “I miss that little dude.”
That is one aspect of love. There’s many other aspects and it’s very complicated and complex, but I think that’s one of the aspects of it.
What is success?
Being happy with where you’re at. I’m not saying “being satisfied,” because I don’t think you should ever be satisfied if you’re a successful person. Just know[ing] that you’re doing the best you can and you’re happy with where you’re at, but you’re still hungry and you keep pushing for more.
How do you describe your style?
My style is me. Style is a lifestyle, it’s how you live your life. It’s more than just the clothes you wear. “You don’t care what people think about you, you wear what you want to wear.” I guess that’s what you could say my style is.
Of course, it’s influenced by people that I look up to, like Tyler, the Creator. I love Donald Glover, I love A$AP Mob, they were influential to me. I don’t try to copy whatever they do, I’m like “they’re doing something with these colors and these threads, they’re pushing into new boundaries. So how can I push some boundaries with my budget?'”
Who are your heroes?
Albert Camus. He was sick because he was a journalist, a playwright, a philosopher, wrote novels. He was a beast. For me, he’s like the OG Donald Glover, people that we look up to today, they’re doing a bunch of stuff. I’m an existentialist, but I like his existentialist view. That really appealed to me since high school.
Kid Cudi for sure. Whenever I’m not in a good place, Kid Cudi with his messages, with his music, how he lives his life, it’s appealing to me. And 50 Cent, because I love that hustle mentality and I aspire to have as much hustle as he does.
