Building a community of compassionate communication and connection
As a faculty member, higher education professional, or student leader, have you ever wondered how to support student success when choices, decisions, or behaviors don’t seem to align with achieving the student’s goals? The C3 program is designed to provide training for faculty, staff and student leaders to identify and support the needs of students who may be struggling with substance use or other personal challenges that may hinder their ability to be successful in both their academic and personal lives. By utilizing Motivational Interviewing and the Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) model, the C3 program features collaborative conversations, enhances self-awareness and guides students towards resources.
What is Motivational Interviewing?
Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative conversation that can strengthen a person’s own motivation for and commitment to change. It is a tool that you can use to identify and support the needs of students who may be engaged in high risk drinking, opioids or other substance use.
Through evidence-based training, participants will learn, develop and practice Motivational Interviewing skills. Instruction will be provided on how to administer a brief screening and refer individuals to resources and treatment.
What is the Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) model?
SBIRT is an evidence based practice that can be used by healthcare care professionals to help individuals who may be struggling with substance use disorders. SBIRT can be used to:
- Identify a potential issue or problem with substance use using a standard screening tool.
- Explore the potential for change, through a brief intervention.
- Refer an individual to appropriate resources to assist them in making a change regarding their substance use.
- Support the use of treatment for those showing signs of dependence.
