Shake Smart comes to the SDFC

Calling all fans of acai bowls, protein shakes and smoothies! Shake Smart, a company specializing in healthy on-the-go options, is moving into the SDFC and will have its grand opening on Aug. 28 where all regular-sized drinks will be free! The grand opening will run from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., same as the company’s regular operating hours.

Shake Smart was created by college students for college students, with the goal of providing fresh options for those with little time to stop and eat.

“We wanted to create something that was convenient and fast for students but also provided them with affordable and quality options,” Co-founder Kevin Gelfand said. Gelfand explained that him and partner Martin Reiman personally experienced a lack of affordable and healthy choices on their own college campus, and this inspired them to seek a solution.

Shake Smart offers a variety of options, from cold drinks to nutritious foods that students can enjoy pre and post workout, or take with them to their next destination. Customers use a self-order kiosk where they can customize their meals and obtain menu recommendations based on what they are looking for.

With the inputting of a phone number, the kiosk can remember orders and even save them for a quick shortcut on the next visit. After building their creations, customers then proceed to pay at the register.

“We really wanted to make Shake Smart easy and accessible, as well as keep costs low,” said Gelfand. This self-order system helps them do just that, keeping menu prices at a typical range between $3 and $7. There is also a Shake Smart app available, where students can leave their money at home and earn rewards each visit.

Though the Shake Smart team believes in quality food all around, their emphasis is specifically on protein. Their protein shakes come in a variety of flavors such as cookies n’ cream, banana split and chocolate covered strawberry, among many others.

According to the Shake Smart website, their signature shakes are made with real fruits and vegetables, and no artificial or processed sugars are added.

As for their bowls, you can get them either scooped or blended. Bowl flavors include acai, dragon, raw-pb and more. You can also purchase overnight oats with your choice of toppings, as well as sandwiches, wraps and oatmeal.

Shake Smart is available at many college campuses across the country, already open at schools like U of A and SDSU. Their vision is to keep expanding on college campuses from coast to coast.

And for those in search of work, the Shake Smart at the SDFC is currently hiring for the fall semester. According to Gelfand, they are looking for employees who are positive and have the desire to be leaders. If you’re interested in applying, email humanresources@shakesmart.com or click here.
