Devils in Depth: Winter break

“Devils in Depth” is a project that gets down to earth and captures the diversity of Arizona State’s student population. We engage in conversations with students in an effort to learn more about their passions and get a feel for who they really are. Then, we ask them for their thoughts on a central theme. This month’s theme is winter break plans.

“I’m going to go camping! Last year, I hit up Big Sur which is on the northern part of California. That was a lot of fun, I’d like to do that again! I’ll probably just relax and decompress.

“My knee really hurts, so I want some nice, loose i.t. bands. I want to beef up the hamstrings a little bit, get that knee pain down to a minimum. I’d like to throw three plates on the bench press, that’d be nice. I was at two and a quarter not too long ago! I want abs, I’ve never had abs before. I have this kind of weird little fat pack that doesn’t go away, so I want to get rid of that. I want to be able to climb up a couple flights of stairs without being winded. Maybe a triathlon — I don’t know, the sky’s the limit!

“I’m applying for this scholarship to go study in London over the summer. That’d be awesome! I think if I were to go over there, I’d want to do something I enjoy. So, like, creative writing, photojournalism, blogs, just like some things I’m more passionate about. I’d want to go there to like escape accountancy because I don’t feel like anybody wakes up in the morning, and they’re like ‘Accounting!,’ right?”

“I’m going to go back home to Texas, just enjoy myself and work maybe. See my family. I haven’t seen my family in a long time. My mom came out for parents’ weekend in September.

“I try to lift every day. Maybe this next year, I’ll add more cardio. I got hurt this year, I got a knee injury so it kind of made my cardio suck. I was playing basketball, I came down, and I overextended. It was really bad, so I’m trying to get back into it and see what I can do.

“If I don’t get an internship by [winter break], I’m sure I’ll be applying for that, an internship and meeting people. I’d probably want to work for like a basketball team or something, professional sports organization.”

“I’m celebrating Christmas for like a month. Every Christmas Eve, we go to my grandparents’ house, and then Christmas day we just hang out. I might go to Decadence!

“I coach volleyball  and that just ended, so I have to get back into creating my own workout instead of just playing volleyball. I don’t really go to the gym, I just kind of work out at my house. I’ll do, like, pushups and cardio. I just try to eat cleaner, avoid gluten during the week, but I don’t really care on weekends. It doesn’t really work, but I do my best!

“I’m going abroad next semester, so I’m just getting all that in order. I’m going to Argentina, I’m so excited! All my class are in Spanish because it’s my minor.”

“Well, after finals, I’m going home. I live in New York, so I’m going home for a week and then coming back here to work. I work at Talking Stick Resort Arena in ticket sales. I’m going to Vegas, and then I’m going to Houston for like three days. My best friend moved from New York to Houston, so I’m going to visit her. My family is very weird — we’re Lutheran but we celebrate Christmas. We go to the movies and get Asian food afterward!

“I should probably work out more, running longer. I hurt my knee while I was playing soccer, so I probably should get back into doing more things to help my knee. I played in high school. I was going to play in college. I had offers from Temple [University], but I got hurt my senior year of high school. Then, I came here!

“I started studying Sports Journalism. It’s cool, I really like the opportunities that I have! It’s definitely a different major, it’s very interesting. I think I’m going to do my internships next Fall for my junior year just so that my class load isn’t as big as it is now. I want to intern for the Phoenix Rising.”
