“Devils in Depth” is a project that gets down to earth and captures the diversity of Arizona State’s student population. We engage in conversations with students in an effort to learn more about their passions and get a feel for who they really are.

Jeremy Beren is a Copy Writer at the SDFC and one of the minds behind Devils in Depth. In Part One of the two-part series, co-author Julio Lugo sat down with Jeremy and asked him his thoughts on the themes covered this semester.

The ASU Quidditch program made a fantastic start of the year. Their ASU team placed 2nd in their Regional tournament, winning an automatic bid to the National Tournament in Texas! Their second team, Sun Devil Quidditch (SDQ) worked solidly in the tournament as well, earning an At-Large-Bid to the National Tournament as well! This means for the first time in organization history, two teams will be competing at the biggest Quidditch stage possible-- an enormous win for Sun Devil Sport Clubs!

Q: What is the competition? Where is it held? Who will you be competing against?

A: We are competing at Josh-E-Naach on Feb. 10. It’s a three-day event in New York. There is a mixer where all teams come together to mingle, play games, eat dinner and determine the show order lineup through a double-blind game that randomizes the order. After the mixer teams practice into the night to polish their routines.

Ah, the holidays. It’s that special time of year centered on family, togetherness and food.

Lots of food.

Sooooo much food.

From Thanksgiving through Christmas, we tend to eat more than we can burn off in the gym. Staying active during the holidays can be a challenge — for example, I recently found myself lacking the motivation to get up and go for a run to offset the giant plate of carbs curry chicken I just ate.

When we enter the SDFC and are greeted by the many friendly faces of the workers, do we ever stop to think about who they really are, what they are like? Probably not. There’s more to our employees meets the eye. I had the pleasure of sitting down and interviewing Madison about her life, inside and outside of the SDFC.

Julio: Can you tell us who you are?

As a sophomore, ASU student Tarek Salama tried out and made the men’s soccer team as an attacking midfielder — and two years later, he helped lead the team to its best campaign ever. However, he had to balance being a sport club captain with his studies at the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.
