Devils in Depth: Winter routines
“Devils in Depth” is a project that gets down to earth and captures the diversity of Arizona State’s student population. We engage in conversations with students in an effort to learn more about their passions and get a feel for who they really are. Then, we ask them for their thoughts on a central theme. Our current theme is winter routines.

Every night, I like to meet up with some friends that have previously completed the classes I’m taking. I have a lot of friends who are in upper division classes or who are older than me, and they help tutor me almost every night. I like to sit down quietly, read the material and just study. I study at Armstrong Hall and Noble Library. Noble is nice because they have big rooms, and a lot of people in my classes like to study there too. Armstrong is nice because it’s very quiet, and it’s more like your own studying. It’s good to get out of your own house.
Outside of class, I like to spend a lot of my time at the gym. I try to go every day at least, mostly three to five times a week. It’s fun to spend a lot of my time there because I enjoy what I’m doing and I know I’m improving myself. Other than that, I have a lot of brothers in my fraternity that come over to our house and just kind of hang out all the time. So, that’s nice. I make a lot of pasta, which is pretty fun because everyone comes together to eat it. I’m a very clean person too, so whether I’m cooking or anything else, I try to clean up my environment as best as I can. A clean house and a clean room is a clean mind.

I am a part of the MBA Finance Program, and the way the program is structured has kind of become the structure of my life. We’re on a quarter system, so right now we’re at the halfway point in our quarter. Usually I’m on campus all day and, if I have pockets of time, I’ll try to get work done or I’ll eat. And then when I go home and I don’t have anything to do, I’ll watch a movie because I need to relax. I’ve been drinking a lot of tea. My favorite one is called Tumeric Bliss. My routine used to be that I’d go to karaoke on Thursday nights, but I don’t do that anymore. That was my social event but now I’m just so swamped that I don’t have time.
I work alone and with friends. We have a lot of team projects so I do all of those with people, but I like to study alone too. I study two to three hours a day, and on the weekends, it’s probably more like five. I haven’t altered my routine much with the changing of the seasons. I don’t really have a life outside of school right now. I’ve started walking to school because my brakes are broken on my bike and since it isn’t hot anymore, I can do that now. Also, it’s officially sneaker season, so I’m wearing those now! I changed my wardrobe, but not my routines. For me it’s always wake up, work, go to sleep.

I’m also in the MBA Finance Program. It’s hard to get into a routine because your schedule is always changing. It’s also hard because a lot of our work is teamwork and you have to find different times that work with everyone’s schedules. I like to have cereal in the morning, but one week I won’t have time for that because I have an 8 a.m. or a team meeting, whereas the next week I will have the opportunity to sleep in, slow down and shower in the morning. So it’s just managing every week by week, day by day. I live in Phoenix so my thing is to cram everything within the week Monday through Thursday. We don’t have class on Fridays.
I try to get everything done so I can be in Phoenix and not have to go to school. My routine is staying home as much as I can; that’s my refuge. It’s a break from school where I can just relax. I love studying at Sip coffee on Indian School. It’s really nice because I stay there all day. I get my coffee in the morning which is so good, and they have really good beers too. I have those in the afternoon. On the weekends, I get a lot of my TV done and go through my favorite shows on Netflix. Also, I like to go hiking! Now that it’s colder, I’ve been hiking a lot with my roommates every other Saturday. Things are crazy for me, but I keep structure when I can.

I don’t study that much. But, on Sundays after our fraternity chapter, I go to the library for about four hours and study for any upcoming exams and tests. So, I do that every Sunday. Pretty much, I play it on a day by day basis. I’ll study one to two days in advance of a test. But, outside of that, I don’t study a whole lot. When I’m doing homework though, I like to do it in a group setting. When I’m by myself, I tend to get distracted and bored. So, I like to do it in groups where I can have a conversation while still doing the work.
I spend a good majority of [my time] at our fraternity house. Just hanging out with the guys, getting closer to them and stuff. I like to go play basketball, I try to go once a day. But, usually it’s like three times a week. During the Summer, I’ll golf a lot more outside. Now, I just don’t have as much time to go. I tend to play more basketball. When I’m back home in Champagne, Illinois, and I have more time, I like to play golf.
