So, you’re coming to ASU in the fall? Awesome! You must be excited…to drown in so much information in the first week of school. You have to worry about housing, tuition and figuring out where your classes are — and what’s this you hear about a secret garden?

Fret not, you newbies are in luck.

There is so much behind-the-scenes action at the SDFC that it can be difficult to comprehend it all. Smart financial management not only keeps the SDFC on solid ground, but it also allows the Complex to continue hosting fun, intriguing events. A central figure in this sense is Business Coordinator Gari Hernandez.

Hernandez is majoring in economics and computer science. He began working at the SDFC as a Business Specialist in Dec. 2016, and he was eventually promoted to a coordinator position last year. His background in the former made him a natural fit for that job at the SDFC.

The SDFC prides itself on being a welcoming, diverse environment for guests and employees alike. SDFC employees come from a variety of backgrounds and nationalities, each with their own unique culture. Outreach Coordinator Chetandeep Singh Gill is one such employee.

Gill hails from a tiny village in Punjab, a state in India. He’s a graduate student at ASU, and he’s set to walk in May with a Master’s in mechanical engineering.

“From an early age, I was fascinated [by] how machines work, how things work, like how we’re able to get electricity,” Gill said.

The Tempe SDFC is a premier workout spot for ASU students, but it also hosts several events throughout the school year. For example, thousands of students congregated to watch T-Pain perform at Devilpalooza on Feb. 24 — and while Devilpalooza is the year’s biggest event, it is only one of the many gatherings organized and hosted at the SDFC.

When we enter the SDFC and are greeted by the many friendly faces of the workers, do we ever stop to think about who they really are, what they are like? Probably not. There’s more to our employees meets the eye. I had the pleasure of sitting down and interviewing Madison about her life, inside and outside of the SDFC.
