Devils in Depth: Favorite movies
"Devils in Depth” is a project that gets down to earth and captures the diversity of Arizona State’s student population. We engage in conversations with students in an effort to learn more about their passions and get a feel for who they really are. Then, we ask them for their thoughts on a central theme. This month’s theme is favorite movies.
“Coyote Ugly.” Have you ever seen that? I love that movie because it’s a really fun movie. The storyline is very good — it’s about this girl who wants to be a songwriter, and she moves to New York and ends up working at this bar, starts dancing on the tables and stuff. Tyra Banks is in that movie and I love Tyra Banks.
I like the story line. Usually I like either comedy or thriller. My favorite is probably at the end of the movie where the main character, she brings her dad to the bar and he’s dancing on the table, they’re throwing tips at him and throwing alcohol and stuff. It’s probably inappropriate but it’s my favorite.
I like Jared Leto. I haven’t seen a lot of his stuff but I really do like him. I really like Angelina Jolie as an actress.
“Requiem for a Dream.” I love that movie. From the surface level, the movie [has] a plotline of four people who go through drug addiction and the main premise of it is heroin addiction. But if you look more into the movie, it also goes into being in a mindset where you feel like you need to be a different person and you’re not happy with where you are in the present. And that’s where the characters kind of fall off the railings. It’s one of those movies where I love it but it kind of hurts to see it.

Acting is another thing that I hope to get into at some point in my life because i did it when i was younger. In high school, I did Antigone, I did Shakespeare, I did musicals, that sort of thing. I usually got roles that were more dramatic rather than comedic and I think that’s where I prefer to be at, but I kind of like a little bit of everything.

When you act…you have to get into the mindset of the character and you have to bring this person to life. You can’t really be who you are because you want to emulate another person’s mindset, and it just takes you into a different world and you can just get to be whoever you want to be. That emotion that you can extract from really just shows in your performance.

I’ll probably go with “La La Land.” It’s different than anything I’ve seen before and it has a good story line. Then it also has singing and dancing and I think they did it well. The storyline, I think it’s really good and not basic as I’d say with a love story.”

For me, it’s very hard picking a favorite movie because there are so many movies I enjoy watching and repeat watching. I’ve watched “The Lion King” so many times, “Coco” so many times and that’s new. “Hercules,” no matter how much I hate the musical thing and singing I can’t stop watching it.
My favorite actor is Denzel Washington. He’s so powerful and emotional within everything and I enjoy watching every movie, because every movie so far that i’ve seen it’s been good — even if it was that “2 Guns” movie where he tried to be more comedic. It’s still a good movie to me.
“Man on Fire.” That was a good one. I’ve watched that maybe a good 10 times. More drama. I’ve enjoyed more drama so that’s what i like, but I haven’t been very picky on what genre.

“Deadpool 2” is my favorite movie right now. Because it’s not just [about the jokes], it has some [messaging] for us, the viewers.
